Americana Outdoors: Tailracing in Alabama And The Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship
On this episode of Americana Outdoors, we’re bringing you exclusive coverage of the 2019 BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops! Tune in and witness the nation’s top collegiate bass fishing teams take to the water at Pickwick Lake and compete for the championship title! Also on the water, we’re joining Clark Wendlandt and Garmin’s Amanda Masters as they get in some quality tailrace fishing time as the championship week activities begin.
Tailrace fishing is angling below natural or man-made dams on rivers, canals, streams, or any other flowing current. Fishing in a tailrace demands a certain set of skills from an angler as fishing the tail race can present many different challenges and is often unpredictable. But with a little patience and attention to how the fish are behaving throughout the day, it can yield some huge rewards for those anglers willing to take a shot at it. Clark and Amanda see the rewards of their hard work throughout the day, reeling in large small mouth, drum, and white bass! Up next, we follow Amanda over to the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship as she gives us a little insight into how Garmin has played a role in preparing college students to take the reigns as the next generation of tournament anglers.
The format for this year’s tournament requires all fish to measure a minimum of fifteen inches, and all teams are allowed to bring in their best five fish. We kick things off on the water with teams working hastily to get some solid keepers in their boats. Before noon even hits, our reigning champions from last year, Bethel University, have already reached their limit, and are currently looking to cull up and add some numbers to their total weight. We also catch up with Jordan Hartman and Nathan Adams of Murray State University, as they bring in a giant keeper and attempt to get themselves in a comfortable spot going into day two.
Also on the line for this competition is the Bass Pro Shops School Of The Year Presented by Abu Garcia. All year teams have worked tirelessly to earn their schools points for this coveted title. So far, McKendree is in the lead, with second place following 700 points behind them. As we wrap up day two of this competition, all eyes are on Bethel University’s pairing of Cole Floyd and Carter McNeil. If they’re able to hold on to their lead, they will become the first school in the history of this competition to not only win back to back years, but also have the same angler pairing win. Watch this amazing story unfold and find out if Bethel University is able to make history, or if another school will come in with a major upset and claim the championship title for their own!
